EAST WINDSOR - Comcast Cable will shift its regional headquarters and call-center operations from Eatontown to the former Lockheed Martin satellite manufacturing center here, bringing 175 employees.

The cable company will lease 36,000 square feet of space at Windsor Corporate Park - the renovated shell of the plant Lockheed vacated when it moved to Newtown, Pa., in the mid-1990s.

Leasing for the office center and its 300,000 square feet of space began in 2000.
Comcast officials said no new hires are expected immediately and the company will make do with existing employees.

The office space in East Windsor will enable Comcast to expand its use of state-of-the-art telephone and computer technology in their 24-hour call center, company officials said.

"The new facility will allow us to centralize many of our operations and incorporate advanced technologies to improve our customer service for years to come," said Joe Fischer, Comcast senior regional vice president for New Jersey.

Officials said moving their regional offices to East Windsor will allow Comcast employees to enjoy a more comfortable environment and gain access to more training and reference tools.

Although the move will not immediately result in the creation of new jobs, it will certainly enhance the local economy, spokeswoman Taryn Duckett said.

"The move is a plus for the township. It will bring added employees who will be visiting local restaurants and stores," added Mayor Janice Mironov.

Comcast is not downsizing and there will be no layoffs, just a move to better facilities, said Duckett. Mironov said Comcast's move underscores the attractiveness of the Windsor park, which is located on the township's Route 571 office corridor and is only a short distance away from other major corporations such as McGraw-Hill and Shiseido.

According to company officials, Comcast has 1.4 million customers statewide.

Comcast is headquartered in Philadelphia and, according to company officials, serves more than 5.6 million customers in its Eastern division which stretches from New York to Washington, D.C.
According to Duckett, the company serves 21.4 million cable customers, 8.1 million high-speed Internet customers and 1.2 million voice customers nationwide.
Comcast's new facilities in East Windsor are scheduled to open on Feb. 13.
