UBS Veterans Launch Real Estate Investment Firm

Two former managing directors at UBS announced today the formation of Atlas Capital Group L.L.C. The newly launched firm will pursue opportunistic, value-added equity investment opportunities in major cities globally, with its initial emphasis on New York City and London.

The partners, Jeffrey Goldberger and Andrew Cohen, have extensive investment experience in both cities and have been responsible for more than $3 billion in transactions in the past two years, specializing in highly structured equity investments and high-leverage debt instruments.
"We have a lot of connections and experience in London and New York, so these are the cities we are going to start from, " Cohen told CPN today. The firm will be headquartered in New York, with plans eventually to open an office in London, he said.

Investment will be in both the United States and Europe, Cohen said, but rather than focus on specific asset classes, the company will instead aim for deals with a high degree of complexity.
"We'll be looking for deals that have certain nuances and angles, that may have less competition," he said. "We're going to be looking for value-add situations, and we'll go where the opportunities are."

Goldberger joined UBS in 2002 to build and run its real estate equity investment platform. The new venture represents his return to being a principal of his own organization. Prior to joining UBS, he was president & principal with The Witkoff Group, a New York City-based full-service real estate firm.

While at Witkoff, he oversaw the acquisition of 17 million square feet of commercial properties worth $3 billion, along with the company's operations. He also was previously founding principal of JAG Capital, a firm engaged in various types of debt and equity instruments.

Cohen joined UBS in 2001 and was initially responsible for structuring and closing the commercial real estate group's large and complex transactions. He ultimately teamed with Goldberger to build the real estate equity platform there. Before joining UBS, he was a practicing attorney for seven years.
