NJ Transit improving Raritan Valley Line

Passengers on NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line will soon enjoy improved service west of Raritan and easier transfers at Newark Penn Station under two measures approved at this morning’s agency board meeting.

The board approved construction of a 1/4 mile "passing track" in Readington, that will enable the rail agency to operate dual trains west of Raritan, where trains now run on only a single track.

Once the project is completed by the middle of next year, eight additional trains will run weekdays between Raritan and High Bridge. There will be two new peak morning departures from High Bridge, two midday roundtrips and two new evening trains back to High Bridge.
The board also approved the redesign of a project that will allow Raritan Valley Line trains to use the same platforms at Newark Penn Station as New York-bound trains. The project, when completed by mid-2008, will allow passengers to transfer from the Raritan Valley Line trains to New York-bound trains without having to climb up and down from the station’s concourse level.
